Child Abuse in Virginia: 6 Statistics You Should Know

Every day in Virginia, children are facing challenges that no child should ever have to experience—abuse, neglect, homelessness, and instability. Behind every number is a real child, a real family, and a community that has the power to step in and help.

As part of Child Abuse Prevention Month, we’re sharing six powerful statistics from Families Forward Virginia that shine a light on what children are facing right here in the Commonwealth—and why organizations like CASA exist to advocate for them.

The Reality for Children in Virginia:

  1. Every 13 days, a child dies due to abuse or neglect.
That’s more than two children every month—lives lost far too soon.

  2. Every 81 minutes, a child is abused or neglected in Virginia.
By the time you finish reading this blog, another child could be in danger.

  3. 5,233 children are currently in Virginia’s foster care system.
49% entered care due to neglect, often stemming from poverty, substance use, or lack of support.

  4. Every 25 minutes, a child becomes homeless in Virginia.
Homelessness and instability often go hand-in-hand with child abuse and neglect.

  5. Every 69 minutes, a child drops out of school.
Abuse, trauma, and lack of support are major barriers to academic success.

  6. Every 135 minutes, a child is served by a CASA Volunteer.
CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) step in to give children a voice in court and help ensure they have the chance at a safe, stable future.

What Can You Do?

These numbers are not just statistics—they’re a call to action. CASA of Central Virginia is working every day to change the story for children who have experienced abuse and neglect. But we can’t do it alone.
