To some degree, we are all biased. Our experiences shape who we are, and our dimensions of diversity - age, race, ethnicity, gender, height, weight, sexual orientation, place of birth, and other factors - impact the lens through which we view the world. In this workshop, through compelling examples that explore the most common forms of implicit and explicit bias and their implications, discussions will entice you to recognize and acknowledge biases when making decisions. The 2023 CASA’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion workshop is designed to explore implicit and explicit biases to create a deeper understanding and self-awareness as we serve the children and families of our communities. Adjoining Ty Smith is Liberty University’s law professor Tory Lucas, who teaches disability law, federal jurisdiction, and property law. Tory will discuss the historical context of disabilities and how biases contributed significantly to the mistreatment of individuals.
This workshop is required for all CASA staff, board, and volunteers. If you cannot attend in-person or virtually, there will a recording. CASA volunteers will earn two in-service hours for this workshop.
